Before Jesus gave the Eucharist or even the Holy Spirit to his disciples, he called his disciples to preach the Gospel and expected them to heal the sick (Mt 10:7-8; Luke 10:9). Jesus never proclaimed the Gospel without demonstrating and confirming the message with accompanying demonstrations of power – with physical healing being the most frequent sign
The Great Commission (Mark 16:15-18)
Jesus said to them, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents [with their hands], and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
The three Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) recount the Transfiguration – a crucial event in Christ’s public life – when He, Peter, James, and John ascended what is believed to be Mount Tabor in Israel. The three Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) recount the Transfiguration – a crucial event in Christ’s public life – when He, Peter, James, and John ascended what is believed to be Mount Tabor in Israel. In the midst of prayer, Our Lord’s appearance was altered: “…his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light” (Matthew 17:2). Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared alongside Christ conversing with Him.
What was the purpose of the Transfiguration? By revealing His glory on the mountain, Christ offered a glimpse of heavenly joy to bolster the faith and courage of these three Apostles who would soon suffer persecutions.
In a similar manner, Jesus extends His hand and heals us, enabling us to experience the heavenly joy that awaits us. Every individual who encounters the Lord undergoes a transformative experience, whether it’s physical, emotional, or spiritual. Each of us experiences our own transfiguration as Christ reveals a glimpse of His divine power. Through Christ, we are transformed, as the Kingdom of God is unveiled to us.
The Kingdom of God is at hand.
